Robotised island for the certification of measurement samples

Study of an automated certification system for precision blocks used as calibration sample for numerical control machines/tools.

PROJECT NEEDS AND SPECIFICATIONS

  • Operation carried out manually in the certified laboratories through the comparison with standard reference samples. The manual operation involves problems of manipulation and preservation of the non-specific conditions imposed by the standard (Machinery Directive 2004/48): Temperature of 25°C, absence of vibrations, etc.

ACTIVITIES PERFORMED

  • Concept
  • Project
  • Design and development of the PLC/PC interface
  • Analysis and simulations
  • Robot testing and control – work areas
  • Dimensioning and design of the Cartesian handling system
  • Precision and handling tests

GOALS ACHIEVED

  • Use of an anthropomorphic robot to carry out the movement of the pieces from the various worktops and a Cartesian axis system, which speeds up and simplifies the robot cycle, reducing as much as possible measurement errors due to the broader movements using picking robots.
  • The new system fulfils the need to carry out the calibration and certification of blocks in the shortest possible time by eliminating manual and repetitive procedures with a high risk of error. The desired tolerances also impose a temperature control of the piece measuring chamber.
  • The system certifies the size of steel or ceramic specimens used in machine tool calibration.
  • A camera, placed above the tray, can read the identification code of each specimen, therefore check its presence and nominal size.
